How are APCs administered?

For journals that have author facing APCs, ]u[ Ubiquity will invoice after the paper has been published. This will entails emailing the author with the payment request. Normally these funds are sourced from the author's funder or institution, so the author simply has to pass the payment details onto the relevant administrator.

If the journal has a central fund, and does not require authors to source APC funds, then the journal will be directly invoiced. In many cases, the journal will have pre-paid for APC credit, meaning that the administration costs and money transfer costs are reduced. Monthly financial statements are provided to the journal, should this be the case, so that they have full oversight of how the pre-pay account is being used.
