How can my institution help to promote my publication?

Your institution may have a number of methods to help you promote your work. For example:

  1. Social media: it is possible that your department/faculty/institution will have their own social media accounts that are used to promote relevant news, including research activity and publications from their staff. Get in touch with the administrator of these accounts and ask if posting about the publication is possible.
  2. Online staff profile: many institutions will have staff pages that show an individual’s research interests, a C.V. and publication history. Get in touch with the administrator of this page and ask them to add the citation details for your most recent publication.
  3. Mailing lists/newsletters etc: if you have group email lists or a departmental summary of research between colleagues, don’t forget to make sure your details are added. Ask your office or department’s administrator to send it out to your institution’s e-mail lists.
  4. Press Release: if your institution has a media/marketing team then it may be worth approaching them to see if the topic is suitable for a press release. If a full press release is not an option then they may still be able to offer other options, such as advertisement of the research on an institutional website. This option will require coordination before publication, therefore if you think that your work may be worthy of wider coverage then it is best to get in touch with them as early as possible. Your editor can help you with this if required.
  5. Colleagues/internal networks: ask colleagues or students to share the article via their blogs or social media accounts, if they are comfortable doing so; or send the article to teaching faculty, proposing that they include it in upcoming courses.

There is nothing inappropriate about asking for support in distributing your work. Just don’t push too much, and be willing to return the favour.

Make sure that the DOI is provided in any of the above, so that readers can easily link directly to your publication. The best way to do this is to copy the citation at the top of the article.
